I agree with Ken Follett that ” a very a good editor is almost a collaborator,” but I would also argue a good editor is an advocate for their client’s work. While editing is a collaborative process between editor and client, a good editor helps the writer clearly communicate in their own voice and according to the conventions of the piece. This requires two of my proven strengths as an editor: clear communication and close attention to detail.
If you contract me to edit your materials, I will work closely with you to identify the audience and purpose of the document, spot any problem areas, and set clear goals and a deadline for editing.
I offer three levels of editing:
This is the lightest level of editing. I make corrections or suggestions regarding:
- Grammar, spelling, punctuation
This is a medium level of editing. I make corrections or suggestions regarding the items above in addition to:
- Sentence structure
- Use of jargon or technical terms
- Awkward phrasing
- Consistency and accuracy
- Factual errors
This is the heaviest level of editing. I make corrections and suggestions regarding all of the above, and I also examine the document for:
- Overall structure
- Sentence structure
- Word choice
- Clear, logical development of ideas
- Organization of content
- Transitions and flow
- Internal consistency (figures, table of contents, index)
Comprehensive editing may involve restructuring or deleting parts of a document.
What level of editing do you need? Comprehensive editing? Copy editing? Or proofreading? Contact me today at firstname.lastname@example.org and I can help you to decide.
Depending on the level of editing and the length of the document, I charge $15-$20 an hour. Note that a comprehensive edit will take longer than either copy editing or proofreading.
Once edits are complete, you will receive two versions of your edited materials via e-mail:
- One version with all edits visible in track changes.
- The second version with all edits in track changes accepted.
I can also provide educational materials for clients who choose a comprehensive edit.
This is a sample of an editing report and teaching materials I prepared for an ESL client. I can provide samples of my edited work upon request.
